Second quarter results from Apple, announced today, included an increase in profitability and a 29% increase in revenue (compared with 2003).

Also -- for the first time, I think -- unit sales of iPods exceeded unit sales of Mac computers.

Q2 2004 results:
- net profit of $46 million (up from $14 million Q2 2003)
- revenue of $1.9 billion (up 29% from Q2 2003)
- gross margin was 27.8% (down from 28.3% in Q2 2003)
- international sales accounted for 43% of revenue
- 749 thousand Macintosh units shipped (up 5% from Q2 2003)
- 807 thousand iPod units shipped (909% increase from Q2 2003)

Q1 results:
- net profit of $63 million (up from $8 million loss in Q1 2003)
- revenue of $2 billion (up 36% from Q1 2003)
- gross margin was 26.7% (down from 27.6 in Q1 2003)
- international sales accounted for 44% of revenue
- 829 thousand Macintosh units shipped (up 12% from Q1 2003)
- 733 thousand iPod units shipped (up 235% from Q1 2003)

With such great news, I expect the stock to go down a bit and Macheads to b*tch & moan as is their normal reaction. Some don't like the fact that Apple sold more iPods than Macs -- you're correct, the first time this has occurred in Apple's history. While I didn't expect such a tremendous increase in sales, the iPod is steadily becoming a crowd pleaser.

I'm confident that there'll be some official word of new Macs in the next week or so. Supposedly Apple is making a major announcement on Sunday. With the newly configured eMacs, the iMac has to be next. (PBs and desktops late Spring/mid-Summer, IMMHO).
