The critics have spoken: Apple's new iMac G5 is derivative and boring, a big disappointment, and a missed opportunity.

Memo to Apple: the next iMac should have these features:

  • revolutionary, stylish design
    (but nothing too-strange looking)
  • everything a Media Center PC can do
(but priced lower than a bare-bones Windows PC)
  • stable, reliable, and dependable
(but behaves just like a Windows PC)
  • built from both matter and anti-matter

Wow. Some people are just critical for the sake of being critical. I think it's really beautiful and will start changing the way we think of computing devices. More and more of these things will find their ways off people's desks.

let's see, I bought my father an eMac for Father's Day (along with my brothers and sister) and it cost over $1K with the 3-year maintenance package. Now for around $300 more I could have gotten him a 17" G5. For around $900 more I can get a 20" display with the G5 included in about 2 months.

The downside? They left out the FireWire 800 ports for the external hard drive. I understand that will be possibly coming in the next rev.

An idea for the pedistal is to get one of those marble-based lazy-susans so it can rotate as well as tilt - and also some velcro.

Nobody tells Mercedes Benz to make cheeper cars. That is because Mercedes Benz makes quality cars. Apple makes quality computers, and you are always going to have to pay extra for quality. That's that.

The couch critics would run Apple into the ground. "Design professionals" quip that the design is boring or ugly. Duh.... So is the iPod if you look at it that way (which was also predicted to be a flop - ha!). Buy your own tacky stickers if you want to dress it up but don't mess with class! The clean simplicity of the design will grow on the critics (not that they'll admit it).

Apple now just needs to get 'em into the stores for the Holiday season....

I can't believe that criticism. Amen to your point. I think the new iMacs are gorgeous! I'm drooling for one even though I just bought a new G5 tower. No more hunky box cluttering up your desk or floor.
