iPod Photo and more
Posted by Sandy
Contrary to what you may read elsewhere, the news at today's Apple event was not all about Canada.
- iPod Photo
- iTunes 4.7 released
- U2 Special Edition iPod
Contrary to earlier speculation, Apple did not add photo browsing to existing iPod products. iPod Photo is an entirely new product line, with a higher price tag than the iPod mini or regular iPod.
Editorial note: This item has been updated to correct my bad math.
The U2 Special Edition iPod is black with a red scroll wheel, and the band members' signatures etched on the back. It comes with an iTunes Music Store coupon worth $50 off the price of "The Complete U2" -- a forthcoming "digital boxed-set" that will include more than 400 songs (including "more than 25 rare and unreleased tracks").
I wonder how many U2 fans are going to be willing to buy (or possibly re-buy) the U2 music library in digital form? (I wonder how many of these people will be able to resist a $50 coupon?)
All in all, an interesting day. It will be fascinating to see the post-Christmas breakdown of iPod unit sales -- how many people will go for the premium iPod Photo and how many will opt for the less expensive iPod mini?
The U2 iPod opens the door to other Special Edition iPods. Perhaps Apple will someday combine the two special iPods and offer a Ken Burns Special Edition iPod Photo?

I read somewhere that the 'digital boxed set' was only $150 USD.
